- The umbrella association for financial professionals. The Institute of Management Accountants has more than 60,000 members worldwide, as of 2010. It confers the prestigious certified management accountant (CMA) designation. The IMA's mission is to provide a forum for research, education and practice development in management accounting and finance, and the advocacy of the highest ethical and best business practices in these fields.
The IMA was founded in 1919 as the National Association of Cost Accountants (NACA), which underwent a name change to the National Association of Accountants (NAA) in 1957. In 1991, the organization's name was changed to the Institute of Management Accountants.
